There is an efficiency in nature that cities are only now beginning to learn from. One of the most dense cities on the planet, beekeeping would seem to be an unimaginable effort there. But given an urban base, bees will seek out the pollen in the flowering weeds growing through a crack in the cement, or a handful of flowers in a flower box. From the diaspora of a million single moments of bees gathering nectar, a hive in Hong Kong will slowly fill with honey. Designer Michael Leung founded HK Honey as a way to bring nature back into the city, one box at a time.
Urban beekeeping is the application of a highly efficient natural system onto the inherently unnatural system of the city. What other natural systems can be applied to Boston’s urban landscape?
